Route - 200K
Bright - Omeo - Harrietville.
A very challenging and scenic route traversing wonderful alpine scenery.
Climb Mount Hotham, descend to Omeo on the now sealed Great Alpine Road,
then return to Harrietville for the finish.
Coffee and some food will hopefully be available at Dinner Plain both
in the morning and afternoon. Omeo is good for lunch.
Altitude gain: 3,900m of climbing - great preparation for the Alpine
Classic.
Route - 100K
Bright - Dinner Plain - Harrietville
A big climb (but only one) up the scenic road traversing wonderful
alpine scenery to Mount Hotham, turn and Dinner Plain then return to Harrietville.
No lights are required as this ride completes in daylight hours.
Suggested equipment
In addition to standard equipment, strongly consider taking:
-
waterproof cycling top
-
warm clothing (jersey, leg warmers, long gloves, shoe covers) - Mt Hotham
can get very cold (& even snow)
-
2 bidons, or a Camelbak - water from Dinner Plain to Omeo will only be
available from farm houses houses or the Victoria River
-
for the 200K carry enough food to make it to Omeo; if you are quick up
Hotham the General Store & Dinner Plains shop may not be open
-
NOTE: for the 200K ride, I strongly suggest taht front and rear lights
be fitted to the bike & reflective vest be carried.
-
Recommended gearing; a triple or 39/26 or lower, 39/23 if you are really
strong and keen.
Suggested training
Do some biggish hills prior. Near Melbourne - Mt
Donna Buang twice with an average 15km/h puts you in the hunt.
Hope to see you there.
