Halt logging to preserve precious water (1)

WITH the likelihood of water restrictions in Victoria increasing almost dialy (Herald Sun, March 21) when are we going to see some media interest in the disastrous logging in the central highlands and Otway Ranges?

Continually we hear about the importance of conserving water, yet our tax dollars are being used for the woodchip industry to turn water catchment forests into toilet and copy paper.

The irony here is that mature, bid-growth forests use up many times less water than young regenerating forests.   Environmental concerns need proper discussions and action to treat the root cause, not simply "band-aid" solutions such as more dams (Herald Sun, March 22).

The first step must be to suspend the logging of water catchment forests, but the long-term solution lies in increasing public awareness of the finite nature of water as a resource.  Water should be conserved, or used wisely at all times, not just when there is a serious threat of restrictions.
