John Howard’s chainsaws

Letter to the Editor, The Herald Sun

7 October 2004

John Howard’s announcement on Tasmanian forests is far too little and far too late.  I find it appalling that he shamelessly treats national treasures such as Tasmania’s iconic forests to a game of political football in the last 4 days for the election campaign.

This characterises the short-term thinking, political opportunism and gamesmanship of John Howard.   If he is re-elected, two-thirds of Tasmania's iconic forests are condemned.

How ironic to see John Howard in the arms of the CFMEU, the rogue union of thugs that supports ongoing destruction of our native forests, while jobs are lost as the juggernaut of the automated industrial woodchip-driven industry rolls on.

On Saturday, a vote for the Coalition will be a vote for the chainsaws in some of the most magnificent forests on Earth.  I hope every undecided voter has this in mind.
