Members of OREN agreed to hold a meeting last night to formulate their response to the demands the loggers have made for their blockade to be lifted. OREN was unable to meet the loggers demands as the loggers refused to allow them to consult with their members held hostage by the timber industry.

“16 protesters being blockaded by loggers since Monday.  The protesters are held against their will as they are unable to walk out of the coupe” Mr Whitehead said.   “They do not feel safe despite the 24 hr police presence at the SSP Track, because of the on-going  incidents of intimidation and harassment, including flood lights been shone continuously at night on them, running of chainsaws, making of noise, presence of aggressive dogs, and other forms of harassment which ensure that the environmentalists are forced to stay awake.” Mr Whitehead said.

Some protesters who have escaped, informed us that they are deeply concerned for the safety and well being of those still trapped.  “OREN is seeking the assistance of the authorities to ensure that the protesters receive supplies and medical assistance, and above all, to defend and uphold  their basic human and legal rights.” Mr Whitehead said.

“We are concerned that the long history of picket protocol is not being adhered to by these people. One questions the bonafide status of their trade union membership. Since when have employers been members of unions.” Mr Whitehead said referring to spokes person for the workers at the Blockade and owner of a felling business Barry Dent.

“It is disappointing that we continue to receive conflicting reports about the health and well being of the protesters without being able to assess the situation first hand. Our hands are tied, we are unable to come to a decision whilst the CFMEU continue to refuse to allow us to consult with our people who are being held hostage against their will.” OREN spokesperson Adrian Whitehead said.
