172 The official word on plantations
The Age (article), 1/3/99
It's official: Victoria has 205,731 hectares under plantations, according
to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource
Economics. ABARE's September quarter forest products report said that this
consisted of 30,319 hectares of hardwood and 175,412 hectares of softwood
plantations. However, this figure did not include an estimated 10,000 hectares
of softwood plantations. It also did not include new areas planted in the
past three years, particularly in the dynamic Green Triangle region of
the state's southwest. More complete figures from the National Forest Inventory
would be available later this year, ABARE said.
