A small number of anti-logging protesters yesterday resumed their blockade
in East Gippsland despite several arrests on Monday. As part of a continuing
campaign against the logging of old-growth forest in the Goolengook forest,
protesters erected another wooden tripod to close the Goolengook Road,
near the Princes Highway. The Goongerah Environment Centre, which is coordinating
the protest, said two people climbed the tripod, while another five held
it steady. Spokesman Gareth Devenish said the protesters were buoyed by
the response to an eight-hour blockade on Monday from passing holiday traffic.
Yesterday's protest began at 5am before police and the Depart ment of Natural
Resources and Environment forced the campaigners to abandon the tripod
about 12.30pm.
