A source of wonder not woodchips

On Saturday The Age ran a story on page 9 about paying Victorian farmers to look after what's left of our native vegetation. On page 13 there was a story about the Styx Valley in Tasmania, where the tallest trees in the world are under threat from logging for woodchips.

The obvious writing-on-the-wall meanings in these two stories have been reverberating in my mind ever since. Those trees should be viewed as a source of wonder, not woodchips!

Can't we realise anything from the gross environmental blunders we've already made? Short-term gain at the expense of our ecosystems will serve only to impoverish us all for the long term.

What are we doing, desecrating our environment in our laziness, ignorance and greed! We've all got to say "enough!" I've just turned a decided shade of Green.
