Forest consultations: minister should listen
Alexander Chapman, Doncaster, The Age (letter), 3/5/2001
Sherryl Garbutt (1/5) reminds us of the widespread community consultation
process that was used when formulating Victoria's regional forest agreements.
She fails to mention that the vast majority of submissions called for an
end to logging in the Otways.
Furthermore, the study found nearly all of Apollo Bay's residents and
businesses believe the town's future is in tourism, not logging. This is
very understandable: tourism generates around $4 billion for the local
economy, more than 80 times that of logging.
