To save forests, end ALP factions
Peter Robertson, Kensington, The Age (letter), 1/5/01
Let there be no mistake as to why Sherryl Garbutt is allowing logging
in fragile environments. Garbutt is a minister who owes her position to
her factional membership within the ALP. Her faction, Labor Unity, is funded
and dictated to by the forestry division of the CFMEU, whose members will
be out of a job if sensible logging practices are installed across Victoria.
Garbutt's dilemma is a reflection of Victorian ALP factionalism wrought
large.
The bleating by ALP members who oppose the current state of affairs
would be best directed at the factional monster that excludes them from
decision-making in the forums of our party.
Wake up fellow members, and rid our party of the root cause that is
poisoning the ALP.
