SUCH A TRAGIC DESTRUCTION
Darcy Smith, Yarraville, The Age (letter), 15/1/00
What is taking place in the Otway forests is a shame.
To witness the dawn-to-dusk convoy of logging trucks leaving the forest
is disturbing. From one back road alone, I observed about five trucks an
hour, fully loaded. It saddens me to imagine how much of the Otway forest
gets destroyed every day.
I believe the forest is a place of amazing beauty and peace - not to
be destroyed by ''redneck'' ideology and the powers that be.
So what is going to save the Otways? Tourism maybe. Obviously not political
policy. Does anyone care or should holidays just be a time to look out
to the sea?
