GREENS STRADDLE POLITICAL SPECTRUM

Rob Wagner, North Ringwood, The Age (letter), 13/1/00

The results of the recent Morgan Poll (TheAge, 11/1) of forest communities in central Victoria are both astonishing and comforting! With 66 per cent wanting an immediate end to woodchipping and 73 per cent supporting the phasing of the timber industry into plantations, it is easy to see that current Labor policies are not representing the wishes of the people.

With the wholesale destruction of so many Victorian forests, people everywhere are realising the importance of the environmental health of our community. The evidence of climate change, soil degradation and other ills is well documented. Voters on both sides of the fence recognise that governments have grossly inadequate policies for forest management.

But we also need to convince our neighbors in Queensland that the "slash and burn'' approach to their magnificent forests is not in the best interests of their children. We must act now to leave a natural heritage for all Australian kids.
