hygiene is very important in every studio,

if your unsure what to look for, Do ask the Tattooist or piercer lots of questions.

The place is clean and in good repair   Good lighting and a sink to wash hands are also necessary.
The tattooist or  piercer is not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
A sterile needle is unpacked in front of you and is used for each tattoo or piercing.
Cleaning products and sterilizing equipment (such as autoclaves) are available and used.
Autoclaves are the only acceptable sterilizer. and autoclaves must be regularly spore tested every 3 months, the use of a new disposable aprons, new ink capsules for each client, chairs and benches must be swabed after each client,
A new pair of latex gloves is used for each tattoo or piercing.
Skin is cleansed before each tattoo or piercing. tattoo machines are covered with plastic,
Aftercare instructions are provided.
Tattooist or Piercer clearly explains procedure and consent forms are used.

SPORE TESTS
A frequently asked question, or misconception is the colour changing strip or sticker you see on sterile pouches. The strips change colour to give a visual indication that the item inside the pouch was sterilized. The strip does not change colour due to sterilization, but only upon exposure to temperatures which promote sterilization. The strips would change colour if you put them in your toaster. The strips only indicate temperature, and sterilizing an instrument takes time, temperature and pressure.
Spore testing....spore testing should be done routinely to ensure your autoclave is working. A spore test is nothing more than three attest indicators be placed in the autoclave, and run thru your normal cycle. Then two attest indicators will then be
placed in a steam sterilization for 48hours, The control package of spores should grow, and the ones you sterilized should not....if this is the case your autoclave is working properly, but if you spores you sterilized grow, then your autoclave is not working and must be repaired.
The spores used in this test are generally Bacillis stearothermophilus. Any of the Bacillis type spores are very resistant to being killed.
Ringwood Tattoo Studio, performs regular 3 monthly spore tests on all our autoclaves.

CARE OF NEW TATTOO

A LOT OF STUDIOS WILL HAVE DIFFERENT METHODS, THIS IS MINE;

  • REMOVE BANDAGE AFTER ONE HOUR.

  • WASH TATTOO WELL WITH  SOAP AND WATER TO REMOVE ANY DRIED BLOOD

  • CONTINUE WASHING TATTOO 2  TIMES A DAY TO KEEP IT CLEAN.

  • ALWAYS PAT IT DRY, DO NOT RUB.

  • I HAVE FOUND BEPANTHEN CREAM THE BEST TO APPLY AFTER WASHING THE TATTOO, IT IS A GOOD ANTISEPTIC AND DRYS THE TATTOO OUT AND HELPS THEM TO HEAL FASTER.

  • DO NOT USE VASELINE OR ANY THING GREASY AS NEW TATTOOS NEED AIR TO GET TO THEM.

  • DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH THE SCAB.

  • KEEP NEW TATTOO OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT AND AVOID SWIMMING TILL IT HEALS, (USUALLY A WEEK OR SO )
